Widowhood: Death, Grief and Legacy Giving

With more than 1.85 million widowed people in Canada, this session – led by a widow – aims to demystify both death and widowhood. We’ll give you practical tips to help guide you in your work and conversations with widowed donors. With love, compassion and humour, we will explore issues of death, grief, spousal loss, and speak candidly about the role of planned giving in creating a legacy for deceased loved ones.

Participants will:

  1. Understand the widowed experience, grief and secondary losses that widows/ers experience.
  2. Provide tips and insights for fundraisers to work through their personal discomfort/understanding their human and relational role with widows.

Death is universally shared and we’re all going to experience it. Yet, we put death comfortably behind a curtain to let others deal with the messy and awkward reality. So, the legacy fundraising professional has a tough job: to work with donors to imagine “what ifs” after their certain demise and have them get excited about it. Yikes!
